Building an effective home studio for remote teaching

Recording classes well from home can be a challenge but by getting the basics right you can create a simple studio set up which will support effective online teaching. Here, Sean Willems explains how

Hi everyone, I鈥檓 here to share with you three key鈥痩essons on building a home studio that will allow鈥痽ou to replicate the impact of your in-person鈥痶eaching online.

My name is Sean Willems,鈥疘鈥檓 the Haslam chair in supply chain analytics鈥痑t the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Just鈥痩ike everyone else, I came into this sort of鈥痥icking and screaming, and what happened in my鈥痯articular case was I learned in May 6, 2020,鈥痶hat I needed to teach online on June 5, 2020.

That set off 30 days of non-stop work, 10 plus鈥痟ours a day, to create the studio that you see鈥痶here. That鈥檚 version one of the studio. What鈥疘鈥檒l show in a bit is version two of the studio.鈥

This was such an ordeal I actually ended up鈥痺riting up the studio in this paper, which鈥痽ou can find here. So that will be the specifics,鈥痓ut the highlights are here.

And in particular,鈥痶he first thing you have to do is control the鈥痚nvironment. What that means is you have to鈥痗ontrol lighting, you have to block all the鈥痭atural light, control the ambient light. If鈥痺e take this GoPro view of the studio, which is鈥痩ooking down here, what you see is I employ room鈥痙arkening shades as well as a curtain, so that I鈥痜ully block all the exterior light to the studio,鈥痑nd I control the internal light to it.

Next, we鈥痟ave to fix sound. I prefer a lavalier mic so I鈥痗an move around. It isolates your voice well. You鈥痑lso want video, good video that sort of captures鈥痽our teaching style. So, if you move around, you鈥痺ant it to move with you.

Ideally it will have a nice depth of field that allows you to鈥痙o sort of more spectacular things, like鈥痽ou can show people, 鈥淗ey, this background鈥痠sn鈥檛 fake鈥, and you break out a book then.鈥

But ideally what we're trying to do here with鈥痶hese steps, is we鈥檙e trying to create consistency鈥痑nd uniformity in every class we teach. So it鈥檚鈥痡ust like the classroom, you walk in and it鈥痓ehaves the same way, every time, right.

The next鈥痶hing we want to do is we want to set up the room鈥痶he way we teach on campus. So if we stand in鈥痶he classroom, we want to stand here. We want鈥痚verything set up so that we streamline movement,鈥痶hat we can minimise transitions. So it鈥檚 that鈥痭atural way that we interact in class.

We also鈥痺ant to incorporate multiple teaching modalities.鈥疭o, to do that, you know, if we lecture,鈥 you know, we might be lecturing like this,鈥痠f we鈥檙e using the document camera,鈥痠f we鈥檙e doing something in Excel,鈥痠f we鈥檙e doing something in a pdf, if we鈥檙e鈥痵haring a Powerpoint, right, if we鈥檙e sharing鈥疭afari, you know all of the things that we do on鈥痗ampus, we want to be doing quickly and seamlessly鈥痠n this setting.

It鈥檚 fair to say, this particular鈥痵tudio sort of pushes this a little farther,鈥痠n particular it allows us to switch and鈥痟ave a much more fully immersive experience,鈥痺hich is this light board here.

So, you know, if鈥疘 say, you know, 鈥渉ello鈥 here, we can sort of show鈥痶he full scope of what can be done, but that is鈥痑dmittedly a sort of a second tier beyond this.鈥

What the next sort of major thing I wanted to鈥痵how is that other people actually can do this,鈥痺ithout quite the same level of investment.鈥

So, for example, these are two other studios鈥痶hat capture all of these same benefits, these鈥 same design principles. So, here is one of them,鈥痑nd here is another.

So, we have built the鈥痵tudio, as we document in the paper, for less than鈥$800 for several other faculty. So I hope鈥痶his gives you some ideas for changes you鈥痗an make to your studio, and sort of鈥 to replicate your on-campus experience.
