Using 360-degree video to bring online classes to life

Using 360-degree video can help create a more immersive digital learning experience, making practical aspects of online classes more realistic. Here Jane Frost draws on her experience of training nurses to explain how it can be used

Hi, my name is Jane Frost and I鈥檓 an associate鈥痯rofessor in nursing at the University of鈥疌anberra, and I鈥檓 here to share my experience鈥痺ith 360-degree video and online learning.鈥

We鈥檝e found 360-degree video to be engaging.鈥疐or the students, it鈥檚 authentic because鈥痠t鈥檚 filmed in real places and can provide鈥痑 connection to the learning for students,鈥痯articularly when they鈥檙e learning remotely.鈥

During the Covid pandemic we had to move swiftly,鈥痮r pivot, to online learning and it allowed鈥痷s to still connect with our students who would鈥痭ormally be in the simulated learning environment, to give them an experience filmed in a familiar鈥痑rea.

They could use it individually, or in peer鈥痩earning experiences where they learned鈥痺ith and from each other. It鈥檚 accessible and easy to use,鈥痑nd scalable because students can use the鈥360-degree video on their own devices.

It provides authentic assessment. It can鈥痠ncrease engagement in virtual rooms. 鈥

And we鈥痟ave also developed a digital escape room for the鈥痑synchronous learning that we have implemented.鈥疞et's have a look at a couple of the experiences:

This experience that I鈥檓 showing you now is filmed鈥痑nd used in an application called SITU360, which鈥痑llows you to embed hot spots so that students can zoom in find out more specific information,鈥痠f that鈥檚 what's required.

And this has been the鈥痮ne that we have used in both the virtual rooms鈥痓ut also as an authentic assessment. As you鈥痗an see, you can actually look around the鈥痺ard and then explore areas that have hotspots,鈥痺hich have specific information that we need the students to be able to look at. We鈥檝e also鈥痚mbedded notes.

You can see here that there is a鈥痯atient monitor and this is quite a familiar scene for the students鈥

because this is the environment and the鈥痬annequins that they would be used to using each week when they came into the university.

The escape room is a virtual escape room because鈥痺e can't lock somebody in, based on game-based鈥痯rinciples.

The idea is that they are virtually locked in to this experience, they have to find鈥痶he clue which is found by accessing areas and鈥痵olving issues that they need to as part of鈥痗linical learning.

And they will then be given鈥痑 code that allows them to find the鈥痺ay out. That then takes them to a ward environment鈥痑nd their congratulations tick.

We have found that these experiences鈥痟ave been engaging for students and have allowed us to present鈥痩earning in different ways鈥痑nd to still get that engagement when the鈥痵tudents are learning remotely. Thank you.
