In 1999 Selcuk Ya?ar Sports and Education Foundation decided to establish Ya?ar University. In 2001 the Turkish National Assembly approved this decision and the university began teaching in the 2002-2003 academic year.
Ya?ar University offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. There are nine faculties: science and arts; economics and administrative sciences; communication; human and social sciences; business; law; art and design; engineering, and architecture. There is also the School of Applied Sciences, Vocational School, Vocational School of Justice, School of Foreign Languages and the Graduate School.
The International Relations and Programs Office is responsible for welcoming international students to the university through study abroad opportunities such as Erasmus and Global Exchange. Ya?ar University provides international students with the opportunity to experience an authentic Turkish-Aegean lifestyle in a diverse academic environment.
The university has a number of research institutes including the European Union Research Centre, the Centre for Mediterranean Studies and the International Law Implementation and Research Centre. Throughout the year students and staff carry out innovative research projects using these state-of-the-art facilities.
The university is located in Izmir, a city in Turkey in western Anatolia. Izmir is the country’s third largest city and sits along the Aegean coast. The city has a rich and expansive history, which dates back to ancient times when it was the Greek city of Smyrna. As well as the Greeks, Izmir has been home to Armenians, Levantines, Turks throughout the centuries. Its history has been preserved in a number of archaeological sites including the Roman Agora of Smyrna, Mount Kadifekale and Asan?r tower.
