The University of Duhok was established in 1992 to address the demand for higher education in the region of Duhok. It began with two colleges of medicine and agriculture and around 200 students and today has 18 colleges and 78 departments educating over 20,000 students.
Duhok is located in northwest Iraq in the western Kurdistan region around 470km north of Baghdad.
The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate studies in a variety of subject areas including medicine, humanities, veterinary medicine, law and administration, engineering and applied sciences, educational sciences, and agriculture and forestry. During their third year at the University of Duhok, undergraduate students complete a month-long internship doing field work to develop their practical knowledge of their chosen subject.
The university¡¯s International Relations Office coordinates activities for students to gain international opportunities and links. The Erasmus Mundus Program facilitates students to complete an academic exchange allowing them to develop networking links across the world and gain knowledge of a new country.
There is a Student Union on campus allowing students to participate in democratic leadership elections. It also arranges extracurricular activities such as poetry readings, student plays, talent shows and sporting competitions.
