Tokyo Metropolitan University (TMU) is a public university founded in 1949 and primarily funded by the Government of Tokyo. TMU currently comprises seven academic divisions both at the undergraduate and graduate levels, 13 prominent research institutes, and a herbarium with the vast collection of plant specimens collected by Dr. Tomitaro Makino, the “Father of Japanese Botany.” TMU is home to approximately 650 faculty members and over 9,000 undergraduate and graduate students from all around the world, making TMU’s campus community diverse and intellectually stimulating.

TMU is organized into seven academic divisions, both at the and : humanities and social sciences, economics and business management, law and politics, natural sciences, urban environmental sciences, systems design, and health sciences.
To create a campus community that is internationally diverse and intellectually stimulating, TMU has developed a full-degree program in and some graduate-level courses exclusively taught in English. The Department of Biological Sciences has introduced an October enrollment option to accommodate a broader range of students, in addition to the regular April enrollment.
