POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN SUSTAINABILITY IN BUSINESS (2+1 years)

We are now looking a junior academic interested in research and teaching in the domain of sustainable business. The position is within the Organizations and Management discipline in the Department of Management Studies of Aalto University Business School.

About us

The department hosts a strong Sustainability in Business research group. The group is specialized in innovations towards sustainability, including circular economy, governance and institutions, and sustainability transitions. In addition to active publishing, the group is active in collaboration with companies and other stakeholders as well as creating societal impact. The department also has more general research groups on organization and management studies, focusing on diverse topics within organization theory, strategy and organizational behavior. Moreover, the department has a lively, international research community with numerous doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers from several countries. The working language at the department is English.

Department of Management Studies has existing research on organizing for sustainability, sustainability innovation, business models for sustainability and alternative economies. This work offers a basis for rethinking how businesses operate, how new actors and individuals can make contributions to sustainability and how sustainability debates unfold across societies and different global contexts.

The position is related to a new six-year inter-disciplinary project focusing on sustainable freshwater use and water stewardship. The management research in the project will focus broadly on water stewardship activities in multinational value chains as well as collective governance for water security and sustainability. For the applicants, existing research on topics such as environmental sustainability in management studies (esp. relating to water), cross-sector collaboration, legimacy and power, stakeholder theory, and governance of commons are considered as merits. Empirically, the project is primarily focused on qualitative approaches, so methodological skills in qualitative research are essential for the role.

Our expectations

The postdoctoral position is intended to allow the chosen researcher to pursue their own research agenda and to develop personal competencies. We expect the candidate to conduct high quality research and aim to publish in the leading international journals. The position is associated with a low teaching load.

We look for scholars who have completed their Ph.D. within the last four years, or are about to complete it. The Ph.D. is expected to be in a relevant field of study (such as management studies, social sciences, organizations and sustainability), but applicants from other areas may also be considered. The applicants should have demonstrated the ability to teach competently and to publish internationally. The position requires fluent skills in the English language. Finnish and other language skills are a merit.

Postdoctoral researchers are required to be in residence for the duration of the appointment, as we are looking for a member in our lively, welcoming departmental community. The appointment can begin Spring 2025, but the dates of the employment relationship can be negotiated. The position will be two years with a potential extension into a third year.

About the Role

The Research Associate or Fellow will investigate the roles of human endogenous retrovirus (part of human genome sequences) on motor neuron disease. In this position, you will conduct research activities primarily through statistical genetic analysis of large-scale multi-omics data on motor neuron disease. This position will offer the opportunity to work at all levels of research from establishing research questions through to publishing high quality research outputs.

The University of Strathclyde is looking to appoint a Facilities Assistant to support our conferencing and events activity within the Technology & Innovation Centre (TIC). The Technology & Innovation Centre (TIC) is the University’s flagship research facility, opened by HM The Queen in July 2015. TIC is home to ?11m of dedicated, flexible conferencing facilities, and has quickly established itself as one the country’s most popular venues for business events and academic meetings, hosting more than 600 events and 46,000 delegates in academic year 2023/24 alone. The venue won the Bronze award for UK Best Academic Venue at the Meetings & Incentive Travel awards magazine in March 2019; was named Best Academic Venue at the CHS Awards in June 2019; Best Scottish Venue & Events Team at the E Awards in 2023 and is a proud holder of Green Tourism Gold accreditation.

Working across the Conferencing & Events and TIC Operations teams, the Facilities Assistant will be central to day-to-day operations. The successful candidate should have experience of working in a similar environment, such as a conference centre, banqueting suite, hotel or performance venue. The role will involve:


	setting up and turning around rooms and foyer spaces to the layout required by clients
	storing equipment and furniture securely and appropriately when not in use
	receipt, delivery and safe handling of all materials relating to conferences and events taking place in the facility
	?supporting the movement of goods and furniture throughout the building
	assistance with wayfinding in the building and giving information on general use of the facilities
	ensuring that conferencing and event spaces are kept are well-maintained, tidy and presentable at all times, befitting to a five-star conference venue
	weekly fire safety and first aid checks for all conferencing and event space


As well as experience of providing a customer-focused support service, the successful candidate will have existing knowledge and a keen awareness of the importance and day-to-day application of key health and safety and manual handling procedures. This post will involve a high volume of manual handling on a daily basis, and the successful candidate will ideally hold a valid manual handling certificate and be able to contribute to the ongoing and consistent application and development of our safe working practices and standard operating procedures.

The post-holder will be required to work 35 hours per week, 5 days over 7. Shift patterns will depend on the needs of the business but will regularly include hours outside the normal working week, i.e. early mornings, evenings and weekends, throughout the year. A 5% premium will be added to the salary of the successful candidate to reflect this non-standard working pattern.

This post will be key to the delivery of a high level of customer service in TIC, and will require an individual interested in working with a wide range of people, problem solving and willing to be flexible in their approach to the work.

What will you be doing?

	oversee the administrative processes including supervising the work of administrators, organising events, and attending meetings.
