Basic information and contact details for Hokkaido University of Science

institution

Hokkaido University of Science (HUS) is a private university on the outskirts of Sapporo, Japan. It has five schools: engineering, medical, pharmaceutical sciences, health sciences and future design. There is also a junior college, which houses the Department of Automotive Engineering.

HUS traces its roots back to 1924, with the opening of a driving school. In 1953, this became the Hokkaido Automotive Engineering College. After going through several further transformations, including becoming the Hokkaido Institute of Technology in 1967, it merged with Hokkaido Pharmaceutical University to form Hokkaido University of Science in 2018.

Today, the university has about 5,000 students on its Maeda Campus. Located, on the island of Hokkaido, the university is surrounded by parks and near a ski-resort, but also about a 10-minute train journey from Sapporo city centre.

The facilities in the faculty of pharmaceutical sciences include a mock pharmacy, a simulator room, a secure room for preparing sterile injections and an animal research laboratory.

The faculty of health sciences houses an MRI room, a CT room, a hydrotherapy room and machine rooms to produce and adjust artificial limbs.

The junior college houses the vehicle inspection building, which includes a vehicle inspection line and a four-wheel alignment tester.

The HUS Labo research initiative for northern life innovation, funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Private University Research Branding Project, aims to tackle Hokkaido’s decreasing and ageing population and address local issues to revitalise local communities.

The university’s intercollegiate sports teams are known as the Wolves.
