Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, formerly known as Agra University, was founded in 1927 with four faculties: arts, commerce, law and sciences. Six other faculties have subsequently been added over time: agriculture, basic sciences, fine arts, home science, management, and medicine. The university’s motto is “Tamso Ma Jyotirgamay”, which translates as “moving from darkness to light”.

The university is named after Dr. Bimrao Ambedkar, an Indian politician, economist and jurist, who is famous for his work campaigning against the unfair treatment of Dalits in the Indian caste system. He was also known for his role as India’s First Minister of Law and Justice. He gained doctorates from Columbia University and the London School of Economics.

The university is located in the city of Agra, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is a popular tourist destination for its remarkable cultural and historical landmarks, several of which have UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Perhaps most notable, is the Taj Mahal, one of the world’s seven wonders, which was built in the 17th century as a tomb for Emperor Shah Jahan’s wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Other significant sites include the Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri.

As well as the 10 faculties, the university has expanded to having several institutes and departments, specialising in disciplines from linguistics to hotel and tourism management. Across these, students can study a range of courses at undergraduate, post-graduate and PhD levels. .

Students have access to a central library, as well as an online "cyber library". For extracurricular activities, the university has an auditorium, stadium and several parks for students to enjoy. There is a students club which aims to promote personal development and communication skills. Here, students can involve themselves in activities such as debating, Rangoli (art) patterns and cultural programmes.
