Established in 1946, Azerbaijan¡¯s Baku Slavic University was originally created to advance the study of Russian literature and language, and to train schoolteachers to teach these subjects to their pupils.
Today, the university has a broader remit, though its primary focus is still on education and languages. Translation is now also a specialism. It has six faculties: education; social sciences; philology; teaching foreign languages; Western European languages; and East European languages. The Azeri language now features, as well as Russian.
The university has student-exchange agreements with universities across East and Central Europe, as well as with the Central Asian countries and Baltic states.
Extracurricular activities include a scientific society, a charities society, a youth-diplomacy society and a journalism club.
