A Nation in Darkness

Sierra Leone grapples with a significant challenge: only 26% of its population has access to electricity. This lack of power cripples education, strains the environment through deforestation for fuel, and even increases fire risks. Witnessing these struggles firsthand as a child in a displacement camp, young entrepreneur Jeremiah Thoronka was inspired to take action.

Optim Energy: Lighting the Way

Recognized by Forbes Africa's "30 Under 30" for his groundbreaking work in energy, Jeremiah founded Optim Energy at just 17 years old. This company harnesses the power of innovation, using cutting-edge technologies like piezoelectric devices to convert the energy from traffic and pedestrians into clean electricity. In 2022, Jeremiah further expanded his impact by introducing mini-solar grids, reaching even more communities previously shrouded in darkness.

Beyond Illumination: Empowering the Future

Thoronka's solutions extend far beyond simply providing light. His work has empowered over 10,000 people, bringing electricity to 150 households and 15 schools. This not only improves lives by creating brighter learning environments and safer homes, but also reduces carbon emissions by over 70%. Perhaps most importantly, Jeremiah fosters a sense of community ownership by involving residents and students in his initiatives. This ensures his solutions are culturally appropriate and empowers communities to manage their own energy needs, promoting long-term sustainability.

A Global Voice for Change

Jeremiah's dedication has garnered international recognition, with awards from the Commonwealth Youth Programme and the World Wildlife Fund. He actively participates in organizations like the SDG7 Youth Constituency, shaping global energy and climate policies. Currently pursuing a PhD in Social Innovation and Sustainability at the School of Global Studies, Thammasat University, Jeremiah's vision is recognized beyond Sierra Leone's borders.

Illuminating the Future

Driven by his ambitious plans, Jeremiah aims to expand Optim Energy to reach 100,000 households by 2030. He envisions integrating his technology into healthcare and emergency services, ensuring clean energy supports critical infrastructure. Jeremiah Thoronka's journey is a testament to resilience and innovation. He demonstrates the power of young leaders tackling global issues. As he illuminates Sierra Leone, Jeremiah stands as a symbol of hope, proving that sustainable development is possible, even in the face of significant challenges.
