Part of the largest university accommodation project in the UK, the eco-residences at Lancaster University's County and Grizedale Colleges provide 800 rooms for students.

Designed by Leeds-based architects Goddard Wybor and opened in early 2008, the timber-framed flats and townhouses were built with wood from managed forests, with the main superstructure assembled off site to minimise waste.

High levels of insulation, airtight seals and mechanical heat-recovery ventilation systems ensure that energy efficiency is built into every aspect of the design.

Roof-mounted solar panels preheat the hot water, while lighting is controlled by passive infra-red units.

To ensure that students get the message and go green, they are encouraged to track their energy use through an online monitoring system, with cash awards given to those with the smallest carbon footprint.
