Times Higher Education this week launched its new Leadership & Management Awards, in association with the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education.

The specialist leadership and management awards have been set up following overwhelming interest in the annual Times Higher Education Awards, which marked their fourth year last month at a dinner for 1,300 guests at London's Grosvenor House Hotel.

Ann Mroz, editor of Times Higher Education, said: "UK higher education has a total annual income of ?21.3 billion. The average higher education institution has an annual income of ?110 million and educates more than 12,000 students.

"The sector has managed an increase in student numbers of more than 50 per cent since 1995 to almost 2.4 million. The UK publishes the largest number of research papers after the US and has 12 per cent of the world's citations."

Ms Mroz added: "Despite incredible feats of leadership and huge management responsibilities, there has never been an event specifically to champion leadership and management in the sector. It is time to recognise the incredible job being done across the sector and to celebrate our achievements."

While the annual Times Higher Education Awards will continue to honour achievement across the entire spectrum of activity in higher education (including research projects, innovation and technology, employer engagement, widening participation, student support and sustainable development), the new awards will focus on the full range of business and management skills (see award categories, right).

Ewart Wooldridge, chief executive of the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education, said the foundation was pleased to be supporting the new awards. "We believe that they will provide the opportunity to celebrate the excellent leadership and management skills that can be found throughout higher education."
