Positively buoyant

September 24, 2015

The picture painted by your story “Are overseas campus leaders out of their depth?” (News, 10 September) is not one that we recognise at the University of Nottingham. Indeed, it is very far from our experience of setting up and running overseas campuses in Malaysia and China.

The true picture is one of great variety across the sector: international campuses of British universities are a diverse group, ranging from small sites with a few hundred students or fewer to fully fledged operations with 5,000 to 7,000 students.

With such diversity, generalising about approaches to (and the quality of) leadership and management is of questionable value.

Our overseas campuses are led by experienced pro vice-chancellors with more than 15 years of experience in those roles. I do not believe that they would consider their moves to be “career suicide”.

Sir David Greenaway
Vice-chancellor, University of Nottingham
