Aston University David Parker, senior lecturer and co-director of the research centre for industrial strategy at Birmingham University, has been appointed professor of business economics and strategy.

The following have been appointed to visiting professorships: Kristian Moller, professor of marketing at Helsinki School of Economics and Business; Jens Buus, consultant in phototonics and a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, USA.

University of Cambridge

Tom Blundell, former chief executive of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, has been appointed to the Sir William Dunn professorship of biochemistry; Peter Lipton, head of department, has been appointed professor of history and philosophy of science; Ann-Louise Kinmouth, formerly at the University of Southampton, has been appointed the first professor of general practice; John Todd, currently at the Nuffield department of surgery at Oxford University, will take up the position of professor of medical genetics from October 1 1998. George Efstathious, former Savilian professor of astronomy at the University of Oxford, has been appointed professor of astrophysics.

University of Greenwich Liz Meerabeau, former research manager at the Department of Health, has been appointed professor of health care and head of the school of health.

University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology John Vickerman, reader in physical chemistry, has been appointed to a personal chair in chemistry.

University of Bristol H. Jenkins, professor and director of the molecular oral biology unit at the University of Otago, has been appointed to the chair in oral microbiology. Personal chairs have been awarded to the following: M. Allen, physics; M. Benton, Geology; D. Bull, electrical and electronic engineering; T. Cosgrove, chemistry; J. Hill, law; J. Holly, surgery; J. Keating, mathematics; D. Murphy, medicine; D. Offord, Russian studies; A. Waterman, veterinary anaesthesia; M. White, drama. Honorary professorships have been awarded to: K. Cartwright, group director in the Public Health Laboratory; P. Dieppe, director of the MRC health services research collaboration; C. Pennycuick.

Fellowships National Humanities Center, North Carolina John Rohe, professor at the University of Sussex has been elected to a fellowship and will work on research projects ranging from the ancient world to contemporary issues.

European Association of Geochemistry and Geochemical Society The following have been awarded joint fellowships of the society: Michael O'Hara, professor in the department of earth sciences, at the University of Wales, Cardiff; Stephen Moorbath and Keith O'Nions, University of Oxford; Nick Shackleton, University of Cambridge; Grenville Turner, University of Manchester.
