UNIVERSITY OF NORTH LONDON In its centenary year, the University of North London has appointed its first writer in residence.
Deborah Levy, a prolific writer, was described in a review in The Sunday Times (of her novel An Amorous Discourse in the Suburbs of Hell) as writing "like a hyper-kinetic angel". Another of her novels, The Unloved, was called "brave and brilliant" by The Independent.
Ms Levy has plenty of academic teaching experience, having worked in institutions as far apart as the Slade School of Art in London and the University of Queensland in Australia. She was also a fellow in creative arts at Trinity College, Cambridge. Now she will reveal some of the secrets of her success to students in the university's school of literary and media studies. Ms Levy said: "It is so good to be in residence at my local university. It really is on my doorstep. I am delighted." In one of her sessions at the university, she will be reading from her new novel, Billy and Girl to be published by Bloomsbury in November.
Ian Menter, head of research and staff development at the University of the West of England's faculty of education has been appointed head of the school of teaching studies.
