St Antony's College, Oxford. Marrack Goulding, under secretary-general for political affairs at the United Nations, has been elected warden, taking up the post from October 1 as successor to Ralf Dahrendorf.

The Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils has appointed Allyson Reed, former commercial manager at Oxford Instruments, as commercial director.

University of Aberdeen

Allan MacCartney, North-east Euro-MP, has been elected rector.

NIESR

The National Institute of Economic and Social Research has elected John Flemming, warden of Wadham College, Oxford, as chairman in succession to Kenneth Berrill. The following were also elected to the council: Ian Byatt, director general of the Office of Water Services; Frances Cairncross, media editor, The Economist; John Craven, chairman, Deutsche Morgan Grenfell Group plc; DeAnne Julius, chief economist, British Airways plc; Stanley Kalms, chairman, Dixons Group plc; Peter Middleton, chairman, Barclays Bank plc; Ken Wallis, professor of econometrics, Warwick University.

Pauline Wilcock, head of curriculum and learning services at Lowestoft College, has been appointed assistant principal.

University of Sussex

Keith Bezanson, director of Canada's International Development Research Centre and former Canadian ambassador to Peru, has been appointed director of the Institute of Development Studies.

Alan Rudge, deputy chairman of BT and a member of the Council for Science and Technology, has been appointed part-time non-executive chairman of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, replacing Robert Malpas.

James Smith, past chairman of Eastern Group, a visiting professor at Strathclyde University and part-time chairman of the board of the Royal Hospital School, Holbrook, has been appointed part-time non-executive chairman of the Natural Environment Research Council until December 2000. Jim Wallace, UN environment consultant, has been appointed director of the institute of hydrology; Pat Nuttall, acting director of the institute and an expert in tick-borne viruses, has been appointed director of the institute of virology and environmental microbiology.
