Canterbury Christ Church College

Michael Wright, former vice principal and, until 1992, dean of the business school at Napier University, has been appointed principal of the college. He will succeed Michael Berry in August 1997.

Crafts Council

James More, head of the department of design at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, has been appointed by the Department of Heritage to chair the council's education committee.

University of Hertfordshire

Jim McGown, managing director of Three Valleys Water plc, has been elected pro chancellor and chairman of the university's board of governors.

Middlesex University

The title of pro vice chancellor has been conferred on Geoffrey Alderman, head of academic development and quality assurance, professor of politics and contemporary history and member of the Council of the Society for Research into Higher Education.

Chartered Institute of Marketing

Laurie Wood, lecturer of corporate strategy and marketing at the University of Salford has been appointed vice chairman of the institute.

Committee of Vice Chancellors and Principals

The CVCP has appointed Lucy Burns government and parliamentary relations manager, replacing Mary Morgan. She previously worked in the communications division of the housing charity, Shelter; Katherine Mercer has been appointed parliamentary officer having worked in the Houses of Parliament.

Ann Creyke, now at Leeds Metropolitan University, is to replace Ted Nield as press and public relations manager. Dr Nield is moving to the Geological Society of London.

The Royal Society

Stephen Cox has been appointed executive secretary, succeeding Peter Warren in June 1997. Mr Cox is currently director-general of the Commonwealth Institute.

Central Council for Education and Training for Social Work

Jennifer Bernard has been appointed chief executive of CCETSW, having worked for Birmingham, Kent and Cumbria social services.
