Letter: A literary legacy

November 29, 2000

Sir Malcolm Bradbury's generosity and support for the literary arts will long be remembered.

He opened his home and his heart to young writers and showed how universities can be places where literature is not just studied but can be actively created.

In the UK, in these bureaucratic days of research assessment exercises and the Quality Assurance Agency, this fact too easily slips away from us. As one of the young writers who travelled across the world to the UK, simply because of Sir Malcolm's dedication to making universities the kinds of places where creative endeavour is encouraged, the sense of loss at his passing is a tremendous one.
