Adjust your expectations

May 29, 2014

I?graduated in philosophy from a Russell Group university in 2012, and although I?now have a good job (with that university) I?still have the half-joking jibes about the practical use of my degree that Emily Howard describes in “After great expectations…” (Opinion, 22 May).

I?do not agree with the assertion, however, that universities “must take greater care that the courses they offer provide genuine routes into employment”. If my university had had fewer lectures on Marx and more on marketing, I?probably would still have gone to the lectures on Marx. Then again, my tuition fees were only ?3,000 a?year, so perhaps I?simply had lower expectations.
