Tokyo Zokei University is a private university in Hachioji, Tokyo in Japan. It is a four-year art college offering both bachelor's and master's degrees in studio arts.
It was founded in 1966 by Japanese art educator, fashion designer and design journalist Yoko Kuwasawa. She had previously set up the Kuwasawa Design School in 1954.
The university is made up of two schools; design and fine arts. The fine arts department offers bachelor's degrees in painting and sculpture. The school of design offers bachelor's degrees in graphic design, photography, film, animation, media design, interior design, industrial design, textile design and sustainable projects. Master's degrees are also offered in design and the fine arts.
There is a large library on campus, a museum, design workshop, a multipurpose hall for exhibitions and ceremonies, an art studio and a building for postgraduate courses.
The university has a flexible education structure where students are able to study across the different disciplines and subjects and are able to study beyond their specialist area. Students are taught in small classes and seminars to encourage discussions and independent learning.
The university facilitates international exchanges with a number of institutes around the world including The Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, UWE Bristol School of Art, Media and Design in the UK, School of Photography at Gothenburg University in Sweden and the Willen de Kooning Academy of Hogeschool Rotterdam among others.
Notable alumni include anime designer Kunio Okawara, film director Nobuhiro Suwa, animation director Koji Yamamura and video game director Kiroyuki Ito.
