Many of the newcomers to this year’s Times Higher Education?Asia University Rankings have managed to enter high up the list, testifying to the rapidly developing higher education strength of nations on the continent.

This map shows the top 20 new entrants in the ranking – which overall now has more than 400 institutions – and how geographically they are spread across a wide area from Lebanon in the west all the way to Japan in the east.

Interestingly, both Japan and India have more new entrants among the top 20 newcomers (five) than China (four), while Iran matches China in terms of the highest number of top-placed newcomers.

Meanwhile, the graph to the right shows that although China’s representation in the ranking has been growing rapidly since 2016, so has Japan’s, while countries such as India and South Korea have made impressive leaps, too.

Below the main map, a series of bar charts give a flavour of the different research collaboration networks that exist across Asia and the Pacific. Each graph shows the top five collaborating countries within the Asia-Pacific region for a different nation.

China features as a top five collaborator for each country, but it is notable that Japan – despite its huge research influence in the region – does not. Meanwhile, the key role that Australia, Malaysia and South Korea play in different Asian research networks is also clear.
