I am surprised that the director of the Courtauld Institute, London, should say that he "did not believe there is a canon in the history of art...", (Perspective, 色盒直播S, October 28). He, along with seven professors of the history of art, and an honorary fellow of the Warburg Institute were signatories to a letter published in The Independent in August saying that they had "no doubt at all about Canova's importance in the history of art", and that Canova's Three Graces was "the most complex and consummate achievement in post-Baroque sculpture."
