?London, 28 October 2020

Times Higher Education (色盒直播) has today announced the results of its World Subject Rankings 2021, covering 11 subject areas (Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Clinical and Health, Computer Science, Education, Engineering, Law, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Psychology, and Social Sciences) and providing an overview of the best places in the world to study a chosen discipline. This year’s rankings sees a record 1,512 universities rank in at least one subject area, with 522 qualifying for the first time.

United States

The US’ status as a global superpower in higher education stands strong after a remarkable performance across the board in each field of study. As well as being the most represented country or region in the top 100 across all individual rankings, US institutions achieved 9 number one spots among them. For the first time ever, the US also secures 8 places in the top 10 for Life Sciences as the University of California, Berkeley (8th) moves into the group, despite an additional 106 debutants.

?United Kingdom

The UK enjoys similarly impressive achievements across the board. In addition to being the second most represented in all 11 subject area top 100s, the University of Oxford retains its number one position in both Clinical and Health, and Computer Science. In Clinical and Health – where the University of Oxford tops the table for the 10th consecutive year – over 75% of the UK institutions ranking in the top 100 have either improved or maintained their previous ranking position.

Australia

Australia is a great success story in the ranking for Education. While the US’ Stanford University (1st) claims top spot for the 4th consecutive year, over 85% of the Australian universities (7 out of 8) in the top 100 improve their previous ranking positions. This includes the University of Melbourne (17th) climbing into the top 20 for the first time.

?Canada

Another notable achievement in Education comes from Canada’s University of Montreal (74th), which climbs over 127 places to rank in the top 100 for the first time, after previously ranking in the 201-250 band. Canadian universities also made a mark in the ranking for Clinical and Health, as it ranks as the joint 3rd most represented country or region in the top 100 (joint with the Netherlands), second only to the US and UK. The University of Toronto (6th) holds on to its position in the top 10, as McMaster University (11th) climbs 15 places, edging closer to the group. Singapore’s National University of Singapore (18th) also saw growing strength in Clinical and Health, moving up one place to cement itself in the top 20.

?Singapore

For the very first time, more than one Singaporean university ranks in the top 40 for Physical Sciences, as Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (40th) moves into the group, and the National University of Singapore (18th) climbs the ranking. Both institutions also retain their top 20 positions in Engineering (National University of Singapore, joint 12th, and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, 15th), despite an additional 118 debutants.

?Europe

Within Europe, Spain’s University of Navarra (44th) and Pompeu Fabra University (joint 72nd) are among the 37 institutions to debut in the ranking for Law, and both achieve positions in the top 100. Despite an additional 97 debutants ranking in Computer Science, Germany’s Technical University of Munich (14th) moves into the top 15 for the first time since 2017.

?Rest of the World

China’s Peking University (7th) moves into the top 10 in Engineering for the first time since 2018, and Tsinghua University (12th) moves closer to a top 10 finish in Computer Science. Israel’s Tel Aviv University (joint 96th) enters the top 100 for Psychology for the first time, after previously ranking in the 126-150 band. The Victoria University of Wellington (79th) of New Zealand ranks in the top 100 for Education, joining the University of Auckland (joint 46th), which retains its position in the top 50.

?Ellie Bothwell, Global Rankings Editor & International Reporter, 色盒直播, commented:

“With Covid-19 disrupting student decision-making about where, when or what to study, these rankings demonstrate that there are many places in the world to achieve a first-class education, either at home or abroad. While those looking to study abroad can’t go wrong by continuing to look to the established educational powerhouses of the US and the UK, and the continually rising quality of Canada and Australia, these tables make it clear that there are various other places to consider if you want to study in a specific discipline. With more institutions than ever included, it’s testament to the growing strength of the higher education sector across the globe.”
